God promised Abraham land for his descendants, and after centuries of waiting and enduring trials, He raised up Joshua to lead the Israelites into that Promised Land. Joshua successfully brought the nation into the place God had prepared for them, and took possession of the long awaited promise.
Unfortunately, however, Israel did not walk in covenantal faithfulness with God, nor did they follow His command to completely destroy their enemies, which later became snares and traps for them. In response, God raised up judges to deliver the Israelites from their oppressors and restore their covenant relationship with Him.
Amid this dark period, a beautiful picture of God’s redemption emerges through the story of Ruth. We see a foreshadowing of the future Messiah as our Kinsman-Redeemer, and the inclusion of the Gentiles into God’s covenant community.
In this course, “Possessing the Land,” we explore the books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, witnessing God's unwavering faithfulness to His covenant promises, His continual guidance in the redemption narrative leading to the Messiah, and the profound impact these truths have on our relationship with Him today.
